How it began

It began as a photograph.

On a road trip near Vancouver I stopped outside a visitor centre for a life-size driftwood sculpture: a tree that had got up and gone for a walk, a stick in one hand and a grin on its face. A walking tree. I took one photo and forgot about it.

The photo. A driftwood walking tree near Vancouver.

A few weeks later one of those romance scammers who keep finding their way into my inbox tried to build rapport by telling me she was a jewellery designer struggling for inspiration. I knew what she was. So I tested her: I suggested she try AI for design ideas, picked that tree photo from my gallery at random, and asked an image model for ring concepts based on it.

The first results were awful. The model took “walking tree” literally and stood the whole tree-man on the band, stick and all: clunky, literal, no soul.

An early AI draft: a tree-man figure standing on a ring band
One of the first AI drafts. It took “walking tree” literally.

The scammer lost interest. I didn’t. I spent hours rewriting prompts and throwing drafts away, until the tree-man was gone and only what he was made of was left: bark running along the band, branches wrapping the finger the way his arms wrapped the stick, leaves holding small stones, and one bright marquise where the trunk opened. When it finally looked right I typed the name and a letter dropped out: Waking Tree. I kept it. A tree that wakes up one morning and decides to walk is a better story than a tree that happened to be walking.

AI concept render of the Waking Tree Ring
The draft that stuck. An AI concept render, not a photograph; the cast ring is a little more organic.

I posted the picture and people asked where to buy it. I’m not a jeweller, so I found a workshop that could take the image and make it real. We pushed the design further by hand, then they modelled it in 3D, cast it in sterling silver 925 and set it with moissanite. The engraving inside the band says THE WAKING TREE.

That’s the ring: a scam message, a bad first draft, a typo, and a guy who isn’t a jeweller. Every limitation on that list is a reason it exists.

If a tree can wake up and walk, you can do the thing you keep telling yourself you can’t.

Questions

What exactly am I buying?

One Waking Tree Ring in the finish and size you choose: sterling silver 925, a marquise moissanite centre stone (3 × 6 mm), eight small round moissanites in the leaves, and THE WAKING TREE engraved inside the band.

Are these photos of the real ring?

Yes. The product photos are the cast ring. The only render is in the story above, and it is labelled as one.

What is vermeil?

Real gold over sterling silver. The yellow gold and rose gold finishes are vermeil; the oxidized and bright finishes are sterling silver.

How do I know my size?

Sizes run from US 4 to 13, including half sizes. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger; the band is shaped and sits best with a little room.

How long does it take?

Every ring is made to order, to your size. Allow about six weeks.

Why “Waking” and not “Walking”?

The missing letter is on purpose. A tree that was walking is a curiosity; a tree that woke up and decided to walk is a choice. The ring is a reminder of that choice.

Is it a good gift?

It was made to be given. It suits anyone starting something new, coming back from something hard, or doubting what they can do.
